PROGRAMS,PROJECTS and WORK CAMPS

Our programs/Projects will allow you to experience the Kenyan culture and to meet volunteers from all over the world. This is a unique experience to volunteer abroad, especially for those who only have a short time available and for those who can stay for longer.

All our  Volunteers attend a short orientation session at the beginning of the camp that help to understand the project aims and to learn about the customs of the local community.

Slum kid can Shine program is meant to empower and improve and change the lives of the children who live in slums. this program will involves games, training and teaching and also interaction with other volunteers to share and exchange ideas. we also intend to offer scholarhips and students exchange programs with our partner organizations

Project background

In Nairobi volunteers will be posted at Kariobangi Community Home in Starehe Constituency. This home is put up in Kariobangi Slums. The project was launched in October 2017 in the view to reach many children who are bright but stuck in poverty within the slum. The main focus for the project is promotion of education and nature talents among the young generations in the slums.

In the village, the project will be located in a local school, Muneme Primary School in Kitui County. This a focused school that has so far done well in education and sports in the region. The main activity will be tree planting and education. The school has opened its door to volunteers for a longtime for them serve and interact with the community. The surrounding areas are full of indigenous trees and various fruits as well. The area is approximately 3 hours drive from Nairobi city.

Project Objectives

-Promote education and sports in slum area

-Promotes sports and nature talents

-Culture exchange between International and locals

-Mobilizing the local youths and International volunteers to work together

 

Project Activities

-Teaching in slum schools and village school as well

-Tree planting

-Art work activities, music classes, sports and drama forums

-Open discussions with youth and women groups

-Visiting historical sites in the community

-Home visits

Health Services

In Nairobi they are more advanced hospitals which are very near to the project site whole in the village, health centers are approximately 5km form the project site with other alternative being the Kitui town within the county. Honken will not take responsibility of any complicated diseases as such volunteers are advised to carry with them their medical covers and insurance.

Participation

Volunteers of above 18 years, able to communicate in English and have a good sound mind. They should have a positive attitude, willing to interact with a diversity of cultures both local and international.

This is a bilateral workcamp between Kenya and Hong Kong meaning that majority will come from those two countries. Anybody can apply to join the workcamp but not later than 1 week to the start of the program

Weather/Climate

During January the country experience drought season where it’s hot during the day and cold night hours where the temperature ranges from 24°C – 31°C.

Accommodation and Meals

In Nairobi the volunteers will be accommodated in a three star hotel and have their lunch and dinner in a local restaurants.

While in the community they will be accommodated within the school premises and will have to carry along sleeping bags, mats, mosquito nets, working cloths and boots for manual activities. The toilets will be pit local latrine and no shower in the bathroom.

In the village, volunteers will prepare their own meals and the last night will be a cultural night in the where have volunteers get a chance to test food from all the other countries represented in the work camp.

NB: The cost of accommodation will be catered in participation fees but not any tertiary foods and beverages e.g. Beers, sodas, cigarettes but volunteers can have them at their own extra expences.

What to Bring

Participants shall be required to bring own sleeping bags, mats, pillow, mosquito nets sun/mosquito creams/repellant, working gloves and boots/shoes light working hours and warm clothes at night as it may turn out to be chilly or cold; musical instruments(optional);personal effects i.e. soaps, tooth paste, toiletry etc.

Bringing your national flag common Art facts of your country; stories, games, picture and local recipes for cultural presentation form your country is advisable to for social interaction. Above all do not forget a happy and positive attitude and energy.

NB: Very short (Hot pants) skirts and dresses will not be culturally welcome especially for women in the village. Smoking in public is illegal with engagement in drugs/harsh carries a life sentenced.

The project shall cost 200 Euros fees inclusive of the transport form airport to the project and back to the airport. Including meals and accommodation within proposed premises.

Tour & Travel

Volunteers will have a chance to travel in Kenya and east Africa after the workcamp at an extra cost. This tour will be 3 days 2 nights at Maasai Mara National Park or Tsavo National Park. Those volunteers wishing to tour Kenya after the workcamp to make payment not later that the start of the workcamp. The volunteers will see migration of animals and exchange of cultural practices with the Maasai local communities.

The volunteers will see migration of animals and exchange of cultural practices with the Maasai local communities.

The project was launched in October 2017 in the view to reach many children who are bright but stuck in poverty within the slum. The main focus for the project is promotion of education and nature talents among the young generations in the slums.

In the village, the project will be located in a local school, Muneme Primary School in Kitui County. This a focused school that has so far done well in education and sports in the region. The main activity will be tree planting and education. The school has opened its door to volunteers for a longtime for them serve and interact with the community. The surrounding areas are full of indigenous trees and various fruits as well. The area is approximately 3 hours drive from Nairobi city.

Project Objectives

-Promote education and sports in slum area

-Promotes sports and nature talents

-Culture exchange between International and locals

-Mobilizing the local youths and International volunteers to work together

-Teaching in slum schools and village school as well

-Tree planting

-Art work activities, music classes, sports and drama forums

-Open discussions with youth and women groups

-Visiting historical sites in the community

In Nairobi they are more advanced hospitals which are very near to the project site whole in the village, health centers are approximately 5km form the project site with other alternative being the Kitui town within the county. Honken will not take responsibility of any complicated diseases as such volunteers are advised to carry with them their medical covers and insurance.

Participation

Volunteers of above 18 years, able to communicate in English and have a good sound mind. They should have a positive attitude, willing to interact with a diversity of cultures both local and international.

This is a bilateral workcamp between Kenya and Hong Kong meaning that majority will come from those two countries. Anybody can apply to join the workcamp but not later than 1 week to the start of the program

Weather/Climate

During January the country experience drought season where it’s hot during the day and cold night hours where the temperature ranges from 24°C – 31°C.

Accommodation and Meals

In Nairobi the volunteers will be accommodated in a three star hotel and have their lunch and dinner in a local restaurants.

While in the community they will be accommodated within the school premises and will have to carry along sleeping bags, mats, mosquito nets, working cloths and boots for manual activities. The toilets will be pit local latrine and no shower in the bathroom.

In the village, volunteers will prepare their own meals and the last night will be a cultural night in the where have volunteers get a chance to test food from all the other countries represented in the work camp.

Tailoring

Honken established a tailoring branch in Caso upendo primary school located in  Mathare slums. the project is to help the community and the school to be able to mend clothes for the students and the community at large.

ICT Center

The ICT Center is geared to improve on the computer literacy level in the slums as well as in schools. Honken provided Caso Upendo with Laptops that can be used in computer studies  for their lessons.

1. Mundika Home of the Old (Past)

The Program was a complete success, HGVC managed to to visi Mundika Home of the Old in Mundika Busia. the Volunteers were able to interract with the Old Generation and also brought gifts to them. it was a nice experience

2. Wings of Hope Rescue Home (Coming Soon)

Wings of Hope rescue Home, rescues Young teenage mothers who conceived at a tender age and wre neglected by the society. the home rescues the mothers and provide basic requirements like food, clothes and shelter. then after delivery the girls are enrolled back to school.

Honken wants to set up an ICT center for the girls and a tailoring school. you can take part in this noble cause with your donation or participation.

HGVC work and partner with Youth Groups, Chamas, Saccos and other organisation to boost and look for market for artistic groups in the society who venture in making of necklace and bangles beads or do basketry.

we urge the society to support these groups by buying from them these products. hgvc will keep you uptodate with the new products availability.
